CLARKSVILLE, Mo. — Clopton’s Interim Superintendent Mike Gray will report for duty Tuesday, June 8th after being named to the position left vacant by Mark Harvey.
Pike County R-III Board of Education President Christy Kuntz said the board recently reached a separation agreement with Harvey, leaving the head of the district position open. The board approved Gray’s interim term on Thursday, June 3.
Gray is no stranger to the area, serving as superintendent for both EMO Conference schools Bowling Green and Montgomery County. After retiring from the Illinois educational system, he made the move to Bowling Green then transitioned to Montgomery County where he retired June 1, 2020.
Gray explained, due to his retirement from the Missouri educational system, as of Sept. 1, 2021 he can only work 550 hours per year and make half the average salary of the superintendent. Therefore, if a permanent replacement isn’t found immediately, Gray could be in the position through first semester. Once second semester starts, it’s likely the district will attempt to locate a second interim superintendent.
“The Board of Education is excited to begin this journey with Mr. Gray to help us with day-to-day activities and our search for a permanent superintendent,” noted Kuntz. “We have confidence in his ability to lead the district and continue to drive forward on our most important priorities.”
Gray said the district will immediately begin searching for a permanent superintendent, however finding one may not be easy.
“Most superintendents have already signed contracts for the upcoming school year,” said Gray. “So, if the district found someone they wanted, more than likely that candidate would have to try and get out of their current contract to accept the one at Clopton.”
Gray and his wife, Yvonne, currently reside in Montgomery County.
